Fortunately, Complete DKI has a staff of 40 trained professionals that are ready to help under any circumstance. The destructive power of a storm can be extremely dangerous. Hurricanes bring tornadoes, strong winds, and storm surges.

Even a simple thunderstorm can turn into disaster. Heavy rains can cause flooding, and heavy winds can be so strong they have the ability to spawn tornadoes. Thunderstorms also bring lightening, which can strike a house and create a fire. Storms of any kind can be very dangerous. It’s very important to be prepared when and if a disaster strikes.

Storm surges are caused by strong winds forcing the waves on the shore which can cause extreme coastal flooding The destructive power of a surge and large waves can result in destroyed buildings, road and bridge damage, and can also be life threatening. Wind is a very big factor in storm damage. Damage from winds account for almost half of all sever reports in the United states. People who live in mobile homes are extremely at risk for home damage, or even death. If you live in a mobile home, it is important to anchor your house to a steady foundation.

Most everyone knows that if they are having construction done that they should hire a licensed contractor.  To become a licensed contractor a state usually imposes specific requirements such as minimum education or work experience. The state may also require that the contractor prove knowledge through examinations.  A business license however is different from a contractors license.  A business license can be obtained with a couple hundred dollars and a visit to local clerk of court. Finding a licensed contractor isn’t difficult, all licensed contractor advertisements—whether it be an ad in the phone book or newspaper, a flyer that shows up at your front door, or the company’s name on the side of a truck— have the contractor’s state license number. You can check the license status online or call  850.487.1395.

Finding a PROFESSIONAL Licensed Contractor is the challenging part.  For most homeowners, the hardest part of any home renovation project isn’t the work itself, it’s finding a reliable contractor to do the job. Installing kitchen cabinets, knocking down a wall or retiling the bathroom is simple compared with the struggle of hiring a professional contractor who will perform at a high level from start to finish, or even just to show up in a timely manner.  There are so many stories about contractors starting a job and just never returning!

Here are some tips for finding a reliable, professional licensed contractor:

  • Ask your insurance agent- if work to be done is a result of a disaster (man made or natural) and will be claimed through insurance, contact your agent for licensed contractors.
  • Ask friends, relatives and co-workers for references. People you know who have done similar projects are your reliable sources.
  • Read online reviewsGoogle, Angie’s List, and the Better Business Bureau are reliable sources.  Click here for Complete DKI’s Google reviews
  • Check their License!- ask to see his/her pocket license, along with a picture I.D. Make sure the person you’re dealing with is the same person on the license.
  • Verify the contractor’s business location and telephone number-A contractor who operates a business from the back of a pickup truck with a cellphone may be difficult to find if a job needs to be fixed after final payment is made.

Let’s be positive and assume that most licensed contractors are competent, honest, hardworking and financially responsible. However, many are not and problems could be prevented if homeowners knew their licensed contractor’s work history.  Complete DKI is licensed in Pensacola and Mobile.  Our teams provide property restoration services such as mold remediation, water damage remediation, fire & smoke damage mediation, storm cleanup, emergency response, and construction services, so we can be there whenever and wherever you need us. We offer state-of-the-art equipment, and rapid service. Complete DKI  employs quality professionals with the skills and proven track records to ensure satisfaction with our work.  We continually update our skills through seminars, trade programs, mandatory schooling and industry affiliations. Complete DKI utilizes available association, industry and government resources to provide and maintain state-of-the-art technical training and current information related to our trade.  Contact us  on our 7 days, 24 hour emergency response line: 1.850.225.5354.

This Memorial Day, many families and friends will be dusting off their grills and firing them up for some holiday fun! Complete DKI in Pensacola and Mobile want to suggest some tips to hopefully prevent accident or injuries from grill fires.  Let’s make happy memories not tragic stories about grill fires leading to house fires.

Each year an average of 8,900 home fires are caused by grilling, and close to half of all injuries involving grills are due to thermal burns. While nearly half of the people who grill do it year-round, July is the peak month for grill fires followed by May, June and August.  Failure to clean the grill was the leading factor contributing to grill fires.

Before Grilling:

  • Check grill for leaks.
  • Check the tubes leading to the burner regularly for blockages.
  • Make sure the grill is at least 10 feet away from your house, garage or trees.
  • Store and use your grill on a large, flat surface that cannot burn (i.e., concrete or asphalt).
  • Don’t use grills in a garage, on a porch, deck or on top of anything that can catch fire. Never use a propane barbecue grill on a balcony, terrace or roof (it is both dangerous and illegal).
  • Check for damages to your propane tank before filling it.
  • Never transport or store propane cylinders in the trunk of your automobile.

During Barbecuing:

  • Keep children away from the grill.
  • Don’t wear loose clothing that might catch fire.
  • Do use long-handled barbecue tools and/or flame-resistant mitts.
  • Never use any flammable liquid other than a barbecue starter fluid to start/freshen a fire.
  • Never pour or squirt starter fluid onto an open flame..
  • Keep alcoholic beverages away from the grill; they are flammable and could cause massive grill fires.
  • Never leave the grill unattended.

After Barbecue:

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and storing instructions that accompany the grill.
  • Keep your grill clean and free of grease buildup that may lead to a fire.
  • Never store liquid or pressurized fuels inside your home and/or near any possible sources of flame.

In case of a fire:

  • For propane grills, turn off the burners. For charcoal grills, close the grill lid. Disconnect the power to electric grills.
  • For propane grills, if you can safely reach the tank valve, shut it off.
  • If the fire involves the tank, leave it alone, evacuate the area and call the fire department.
  • Any fire that endangers property: call fire department
  • Never attempt to extinguish a grease fire with water.  Use an approved portable fire extinguisher.

Remember that Complete DKI is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the event that you have a fire.  Within 2 hours we will be there to board up your home at no cost to you and estimate what your damage is.  We offer rapid fire remediation, including smoke damage.

Enjoy your day, be safe, and remember those who have died for our freedom!

When it comes to storms, we really don’t ever know exactly what we are going to get. Even though we might think that the next storm brewing will be something small, we still always need to be prepared. Tornado’s are a very strong force of nature and we don’t ever really have that much notice before one hits. Complete DKI has partnered up with the new Red Cross Emergency App that is now available on all smartphones, tablets and the Apple Watch. This app is great to have in case of any kind of emergency. It’s free and gives you the access to have vital emergency information at your fingertips. Along with the app, we have some great tips on preparedness as well as cleanup information for you and your family.

  • Know the difference! tornado watch is when a tornado is very likely to occur in the area. Always make sure your family knows where the safe room is and has all the needed supplies in case of an emergency. A tornado warning is when a tornado has been spotted or a weather radar is showing signs of one in the area. This means your life and your property could be in great danger and it is important to seek immediate shelter.
  • Always listen to your local radio station during any kind of emergency to keep up to date with the storm and to be informed about what may be a threat to your safety.
  • It is important for your family to have a designated safe room and to make sure everyone is on the same page. This safe room needs to be able to fit you and your family as well as pets; No windows at all and preferably a basement or room on the lowest level.
  • Make sure to gather up anything outside that could become a projectile (including dead branches on trees) and possibly hurt you or your property.
  • After a tornado, make sure to stay out of damaged buildings and watch out for anything that could cause harm. (power lines, broken glass, busted gas lines)
  • If you have pets, make sure they are under control. Try to keep them on leashes or in kennels if possible to avoid any injury.
  • If anything in your home has spilled that could possibly be a fire hazard, properly clean up the mess immediately.
  • It is important to document any damage that has taken place on your property for insurance claims.

Most of the time, a tornado or a huge storm is not the first thing that is on our minds. We don’t really think about it until it’s right here staring us in the face. That is how fatalities and other serious injuries unfortunately can occur. Did you know that tornado’s caused an average of 70 fatalities and 1,500 injuries in the U.S. alone each year? They are very serious storms and should never be taken lightly. Just imagine, Johnny’s Red Cross Emergency App warned him one very early morning that there was a tornado warning in the area. So this means, there has been one sighted and it can be dangerous. Well, Johnny chose to ignore the alert and went back to sleep. He was abruptly woken up by his roof being torn off by the strong force of the tornado and his only shelter is under his mattress in his room.  This is something that no one ever wants to experience so that is why it is so important to be prepared and have a safety plan!  If you experience damage in your home, call Complete DKI 24/7. Our technicians work around the clock and are always fully prepared in uniforms and clearly marked Complete DKI vans. Our technicians are alwaysprofessional and presentable! If you experience fire damage, please contact our full service location on Davis Highway by calling 850-CALL-DKI or 850-225-5354. Complete DKI wishes everyone a very safe and happy New Year!

Complete DKI had quite the exciting weekend! Complete DKI was able to donate 8 pet oxygen mask kits to the following fire stations in Santa Rosa County: Pace Volunteer Fire Department, Milton Fire Department, Avalon Beach Mulat Fire Department, East Milton Volunteer Fire Department, Bagdad Volunteer Fire Department, Holley Navarre Fire Department, and Navarre Beach Fire Department. Complete DKI also donated a set of Pet oxygen masks to the Escambia County station on Pensacola Beach.

The oxygen mask kit comes equipped with 3 different size masks in order to fit a variety of different size pets. The small is made to fit a puppy, kitten or any other animal with a fairly small snout. The medium is made for a cat or a dog up to 50 pounds. The large is made for your larger dogs such as a Boxer or a German Sheppard. The kit also comes with the tubing required to hook the mask directly up to an oxygen tank in the event of a fire. Did you know nearly a half a million pets perish in house fires each year? The need for these kits on every fire truck is great.

With each of these stations now having the ability to supply supplemental oxygen to pets who have been victims of smoke inhalation, our community can be more confident in the chances of our pets being revived after being pulled from a fire.

WEAR TV, Pensacola News Journal (PNJ), and The Northwest Florida Daily News covered our story on Friday, July 3. To see what PNJ had to say about all of the excitement on Friday click here
