WE CAN HELP

Nutrients (food), suitable place to grow, and moisture are the only three things needed to have mold grow and spread quickly.   These three things are not hard for mold to find.  Mold can be hidden in walls, under carpets, behind ceiling tiles or it can be visible and growing right in front of your eyes.  How do you know if you have mold?

  • Look for visible mold growth (it may look cottony, velvety, rough, or leathery and have different colors like white, gray, brown, black, yellow, or green). Mold often appears as a staining or fuzzy growth on furniture or building materials (walls, ceilings, or anything made of wood or paper). Look for signs of moisture or water damage (water leaks, standing water, water stains, condensation, etc.).
  • Check around air handling units (air conditioners, furnaces) for standing water. Routinely inspect the evaporator coils, liner surfaces, drain pans and drain lines.
  • Search areas where you notice mold odors. If you can smell an earthy or musty odor, you may have a mold problem.
  • If mold-allergic people have some allergy symptoms when in your home, mold might be the problem.

Check out what Brice Pelfrey, CPM, Director of Property Management, Beck Property Company, Inc. said about his mold experience with Complete DKI…..

” I have used several mold remediation companies in the past, and tenants are very rarely completely satisfied once the work is done. Usual tenant complaints are of headaches due to mold still in the facility or call weeks later and say the mold had returned. The last time I had a mold problem, I called Complete DKI. They performed the work afterhours so that regular business would not be interrupted. They performed all the mold remediation, and I have not had a single complaint from the tenant. I was very impressed with how thorough the crew was with the mold removal and I was especially pleased at how quickly Complete DKI finished the job. I highly recommend Complete DKI. ”

Closing out my second week with Complete DKI.  I was given a company credit card! Guess they’re going to keep me around for a bit longer.

I spent most of my time this week with Vice President Ashlee Carpentier.  While out one day, making calls, we visited with a property manager.  Complete DKI had done work on one of her properties a few months back.  This was a single family home, built in 1986.  The mother came home from work to find water streaming down the walls and her garage flooded.  Directly above the garage was a bathroom.  The bathroom door was shut  (thank goodness!) but when she opened it water came rushing out into the hallway.  She saw no immediate source for the offensive deluge but assumed a broken pipe caused the flood.  This mom, however, knew exactly what to do first.  I would have had no clue.  I can see myself rapidly becoming a sad sack of tears, adding to the water damage and flooding. I discreetly took notes during her story.  I thought that maybe I’m not the only clueless homeowner out there and I would share with you what to do if you have a broken pipe causing flooding in your house.

Sad sack crying over a broken pipe will not be in the bullets!

  1.   Shut off the water supply to your home —  No idea.  Went looking.  Mine is on the outside wall of house where dryer  vent is and (duh) water line enters house.  Go find yours.  Right now.  I’ll wait here . . . .
  2.   Drain your system – You need to get as much water out of the system as possible to prevent water from spilling through the house and flooding it. Start by turning on all cold water taps and flushing toilets.
  3.   Call Complete DKI–  In less than ONE HOUR, we will be there to find the cause and source of Ark required situation.  Water removal with high-powered hoses will quickly beach your boat.

Complete DKI has skilled, licensed technicians with expertise in water damage removal.  Any delay can be detrimental to property.  This includes belongings and house structures.  Our fast response ensures limited loss and speedy remediation.  We have certified mold removal specialists that follow IICRC-S520.  We offer complete restoration and reconstruction services and will transform your damaged, flooded structure to its pre-loss condition, minimizing loss.

Looking forward to next week!  (and using my new credit card!)  (kidding)  (kind of . . .)

Turning on the TV in the morning to our local news channel and hearing that bad weather is on it’s way is the absolute last thing we want to hear to start our day. Of course when we get word that a bad storm is brewing and our home is in danger, it is human nature to become a little nervous. Now sometimes we can hear this news and think that the meteorologist that is making the prediction is wrong and that the storm will pass; that could be likely BUT it is also very likely that they are in fact correct and we need to prepare ourselves and our family for the worst. So where do we start? Complete DKI is here to help with some tips on what to do, what to pack and how to prepare your safe room BEFORE we get the news of a storm coming our way!

  • Make  a family emergency plan. Make sure you discuss with all of your family members what to do in case you have to get out of your house immediately or if you get split up during the process. Have a meeting spot near your house that is in a safe place.
  • Prepare a home emergency kit. Some key items for this kit would include- Batteries (stored safely), medication, portable radio, back up phone battery/charger, water/snacks, first aid kit, sturdy gloves, torch (battery operated), toiletries, pet food (if applicable), baby food/diapers (if applicable), any valuables, water proof bags, etc.
  • Keep your home emergency kit in a safe and dry place. Make sure that all of the items are not expired and are able to use.
  • Secure any items around your property that could fly away in high winds and could be a hazard to you or your home.
  • Make sure your home and car insurance is up to date
  • Clear any loose branches around your home that could be a hazard during high winds
  • Make sure you know how to correctly and safely turn off your power and gas in case of an emergency
  • Identify your safe room and make sure your family knows the quickest and most efficient way to get themselves and any pets into the room
  • Get shutters or metal screens fitted to your windows for extra protection
  • After a storm warning, act quickly and listen to the advice officials have given you. Make sure your other family members are aware and ready to move in t If you experience damage in your home, call Complete DKI 24/7. • Make sure your pets are safely inside
  • Grab your emergency kit and activate your family emergency plan

Sometimes we don’t get a lot of warning before a storm. You could have heard a day ago that there will be a bad storm passing and there will be tornado warnings, but you think nothing of it. The next thing your know, the electricity cuts out and you hear faint sirens notifying you that a tornado is near. Times like those make us thankful that we have family emergency plans and we know what to do in these types of situations. If you don’t already have a plan, we encourage you to take these tips and put one together for you and your family. Never take a storm warning lightly; always prepare for the worst.

Believe it or not, battery fires are a huge deal. From the moment you buy the pack of batteries at your local grocery store, it is important to store them in a safe place. There have been many cases where 9 volt batteries have been the cause of a house fire. What is alarming to us, is that our fire detectors call for 9 volt batteries so it is very important for everyone to know how to dispose of them safely when replacing them. Complete DKI is here to help you and your family become aware of the hazards so that you can prevent a house fire in your home.

I know to a lot of people, battery fires are not the first thing on your mind. In fact, you may even be unaware that 9 volt batteries are such a huge threat! There have been accidents where someone is simply just changing the batteries in their fire alarm at home and without thinking anything of it, they tossed the used batteries in the trash can like any other garbage. The next thing you know, your trash can is sitting out by the street and there are roaring flames that takes more than your water hose to put out. To provide you with even more information about battery fires and safety precautions for you and your family, we have attached a couple videos that may catch your attention.  http://themotherlist.com/fire-safety-video-must-watch/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75_f6CjIcz8 A fire or any disaster for that matter is something that no one wants to experience in a lifetime, so that is why it is so important to be prepared and have a safety plan!  If you experience fire damage in your home, call Complete DKI 24/7. Our technicians work around the clock and are always fully prepared in uniforms and clearly marked Complete DKI vans. When it comes to storms, we really don’t ever know exactly what we are going to get. Even though we might think that the next storm brewing will be something small, we still always need to be prepared. Tornado’s are a very strong force of nature and we don’t ever really have that much notice before one hits. Complete DKI has partnered up with the new Red Cross Emergency App that is now available on all smartphones, tablets and the Apple Watch. This app is great to have in case of any kind of emergency. It’s free and gives you the access to have vital emergency information at your fingertips. Along with the app, we have some great tips on preparedness as well as cleanup information for you and your family.

  • Know the difference! tornado watch is when a tornado is very likely to occur in the area. Always make sure your family knows where the safe room is and has all the needed supplies in case of an emergency. A tornado warning is when a tornado has been spotted or a weather radar is showing signs of one in the area. This means your life and your property could be in great danger and it is important to seek immediate shelter.
  • Always listen to your local radio station during any kind of emergency to keep up to date with the storm and to be informed about what may be a threat to your safety.
  • It is important for your family to have a designated safe room and to make sure everyone is on the same page. This safe room needs to be able to fit you and your family as well as pets; No windows at all and preferably a basement or room on the lowest level.
  • Make sure to gather up anything outside that could become a projectile (including dead branches on trees) and possibly hurt you or your property.
  • After a tornado, make sure to stay out of damaged buildings and watch out for anything that could cause harm. (power lines, broken glass, busted gas lines)
  • If you have pets, make sure they are under control. Try to keep them on leashes or in kennels if possible to avoid any injury.
  • If anything in your home has spilled that could possibly be a fire hazard, properly clean up the mess immediately.
  • It is important to document any damage that has taken place on your property for insurance claims.

Most of the time, a tornado or a huge storm is not the first thing that is on our minds. We don’t really think about it until it’s right here staring us in the face. That is how fatalities and other serious injuries unfortunately can occur. Did you know that tornado’s caused an average of 70 fatalities and 1,500 injuries in the U.S. alone each year? They are very serious storms and should never be taken lightly. Just imagine, Johnny’s Red Cross Emergency App warned him one very early morning that there was a tornado warning in the area. So this means, there has been one sighted and it can be dangerous. Well, Johnny chose to ignore the alert and went back to sleep. He was abruptly woken up by his roof being torn off by the strong force of the tornado and his only shelter is under his mattress in his room.  This is something that no one ever wants to experience so that is why it is so important to be prepared and have a safety plan!  If you experience damage in your home, call Complete DKI 24/7. Our technicians work around the clock and are always fully prepared in uniforms and clearly marked Complete DKI vans. Our technicians are alwaysprofessional and presentable! If you experience fire damage, please contact our full service location on Davis Highway by calling 850-CALL-DKI or 850-225-5354. With Winter quickly approaching us, all that is on our minds is hot chocolate, warm blankets, layers of clothing, cranking the heat up, and for a few of us a miserable couple of months ahead. While some of us may be more than ready for Winter, others are indeed, not! We all like to make sure we are warm and comfy in our homes, especially during these cold months. There are many safe heating methods that Complete DKI would love to share with you, as well as those not so smart methods that could do a lot of damage to you and/or your home. Here are some tips for you and your family this Winter!

  • Never burn charcoal inside your home as a fuel alternative. This is extremely dangerous. If charcoal is being burnt in an enclosed space, it gives off deadly amounts of carbon monoxide fumes that could kill you.
  • Do not burn excessive amounts of paper to build a vast fire in the fire place. This can cause a house fire by igniting the soot and creosote in the chimney. Also, never remove the fireplace screen to allow more heat in the house. It is there to keep sparks from flying out of the fire place and starting a fire.
  • Electric furnaces, baseboard heaters, and other heating methods that use electricity, are the most efficient and safe heating methods out there. Although these methods are a bit pricey, if they are an option for you, the safety features on these heaters make it worth it for your family’s safety.
  • Natural gas heating is very cost effective and actually a very popular way to heat your home. Natural gas is very clean and healthy for the environment we live in. No matter what time of the year it is or what the weather is like outside, natural gas is always safe and reliable. Once you start using it,is has an immediate impact on the environment.
  • Do not use your kitchen stove as a heating source. This is a huge fire hazard and can cause serious damage. People have been known to leave all the burners on at the same time or even set the oven temperature at the highest it can go to heat their home. If you have a gas oven and you do this, carbon monoxide gas can build up and poison you and your family.

Of course when we are cold and uncomfortable we will try any method to make our homes warm. Just keep in mind the tips that we shared today and know that there are very safe ways as well as completely dangerous ways to produce heat. It is very important to educate yourself as well as your family when it comes to fire hazards. Your Aunt Liz from Florida could be visiting you in Colorado and of course she is not used to any temperatures below fifty degrees. It’s currently negative ten degrees in Colorado and all she is worried about is finding some kind of warmth. Everyone is asleep so she turns on the burners on the stove and then falls back asleep. Next thing you know, the entire family is woken up by flames surrounding the house and you have to follow your emergency escape plan to get out! Of course no one ever wants to go through this experience so please keep these safe heating methods in mind this season!

If you do experience fire damage in your home, call Complete DKI 24/7. Our technicians work around the clock and are always dressed in uniform, will arrive in clearly marked Complete DKI vans and are ready for any emergency! Please contact our full service location on Davis Highway by calling 850-CALL-DKI or 850-225-5354

Complete DKI wishes you all a safe and disaster free winter season!
