Believe it or not, battery fires are a huge deal. From the moment you buy the pack of batteries at your local grocery store, it is important to store them in a safe place. There have been many cases where 9 volt batteries have been the cause of a house fire. What is alarming to us, is that our fire detectors call for 9 volt batteries so it is very important for everyone to know how to dispose of them safely when replacing them. Complete DKI is here to help you and your family become aware of the hazards so that you can prevent a house fire in your home.

I know to a lot of people, battery fires are not the first thing on your mind. In fact, you may even be unaware that 9 volt batteries are such a huge threat! There have been accidents where someone is simply just changing the batteries in their fire alarm at home and without thinking anything of it, they tossed the used batteries in the trash can like any other garbage. The next thing you know, your trash can is sitting out by the street and there are roaring flames that takes more than your water hose to put out. To provide you with even more information about battery fires and safety precautions for you and your family, we have attached a couple videos that may catch your attention.  http://themotherlist.com/fire-safety-video-must-watch/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75_f6CjIcz8 A fire or any disaster for that matter is something that no one wants to experience in a lifetime, so that is why it is so important to be prepared and have a safety plan!  If you experience fire damage in your home, call Complete DKI 24/7. With Winter quickly approaching us, all that is on our minds is hot chocolate, warm blankets, layers of clothing, cranking the heat up, and for a few of us a miserable couple of months ahead. While some of us may be more than ready for Winter, others are indeed, not! We all like to make sure we are warm and comfy in our homes, especially during these cold months. There are many safe heating methods that Complete DKI would love to share with you, as well as those not so smart methods that could do a lot of damage to you and/or your home. Here are some tips for you and your family this Winter!

  • Never burn charcoal inside your home as a fuel alternative. This is extremely dangerous. If charcoal is being burnt in an enclosed space, it gives off deadly amounts of carbon monoxide fumes that could kill you.
  • Do not burn excessive amounts of paper to build a vast fire in the fire place. This can cause a house fire by igniting the soot and creosote in the chimney. Also, never remove the fireplace screen to allow more heat in the house. It is there to keep sparks from flying out of the fire place and starting a fire.
  • Electric furnaces, baseboard heaters, and other heating methods that use electricity, are the most efficient and safe heating methods out there. Although these methods are a bit pricey, if they are an option for you, the safety features on these heaters make it worth it for your family’s safety.
  • Natural gas heating is very cost effective and actually a very popular way to heat your home. Natural gas is very clean and healthy for the environment we live in. No matter what time of the year it is or what the weather is like outside, natural gas is always safe and reliable. Once you start using it,is has an immediate impact on the environment.
  • Do not use your kitchen stove as a heating source. This is a huge fire hazard and can cause serious damage. People have been known to leave all the burners on at the same time or even set the oven temperature at the highest it can go to heat their home. If you have a gas oven and you do this, carbon monoxide gas can build up and poison you and your family.

Of course when we are cold and uncomfortable we will try any method to make our homes warm. Just keep in mind the tips that we shared today and know that there are very safe ways as well as completely dangerous ways to produce heat. It is very important to educate yourself as well as your family when it comes to fire hazards. Your Aunt Liz from Florida could be visiting you in Colorado and of course she is not used to any temperatures below fifty degrees. It’s currently negative ten degrees in Colorado and all she is worried about is finding some kind of warmth. Everyone is asleep so she turns on the burners on the stove and then falls back asleep. Next thing you know, the entire family is woken up by flames surrounding the house and you have to follow your emergency escape plan to get out! Of course no one ever wants to go through this experience so please keep these safe heating methods in mind this season!

If you do experience fire damage in your home, call Complete DKI 24/7. Our technicians work around the clock and are always dressed in uniform, will arrive in clearly marked Complete DKI vans and are ready for any emergency! Tis the season to be jolly! I’m sure that most of us can agree that Christmas is the best time of the year! Christmas trees, beautiful ornaments, houses all around town shining with lights, poinsettias on the front porch and of course a good Christmas meal. It is such a wonderful time of year that sometimes we can be so caught up in the moment that we forget some of the most important fire safety precautions. Did you know that U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 210 home fires per year that  began with Christmas tree fires in 2009-2013? Unfortunately, Christmas trees can be a huge fire hazard so it is up to you to take the correct precautions to ensure that you and your family can have safe and fire-free holiday!

Complete DKI is here to help you this holiday season! Before you start your decorating this year, please take a minute to check out these valuable tips!

  • Before you start hanging up lights on your house, inspect them thoroughly to make sure that they are working properly and don’t have any loose connections or eroded ends. If you do notice a light bulb out, replace them right away!
  • Try not to overload your homes electrical circuits. This can be very dangerous and can cause a fire!
  • To prevent getting electrocuted, use insulated hooks to hang up lights instead of nails or screws.
  • Always make sure to turn off your Christmas lights before leaving your home or going to bed.
  • Make sure that the lights you are using outside are labeled “outside lights” and the lights you are using inside are labeled “inside lights”.
  • Never place your Christmas tree anywhere near a heat source. Especially a fire place.
  • Christmas trees always look better wrapped in lights, but please do not overload it with them. This can cause your circuits to overload which can lead to a fire.
  • Keeping in mind that your home could possibly suffer from a fire, take precautions and make sure that all exits are clear and your Christmas tree or any other decorations are not blocking any pathways.
  • Natural Christmas trees have a much higher risk for catching fire. If you use an artificial tree, make sure that it is flame retardant.

Let’s face it, we are all so busy this time of the year. We have last minute gift shopping, Christmas parades, work parties, family gatherings and all kinds of different activities to do in such a short amount of time. It is too easy to forget that simple decorations and an innocent little (or big) Christmas tree could start such a huge tragedy. You could be hanging up the Christmas lights outside with your son and maybe he wasn’t aware that you cannot overload the circuits. He plugged one too many light strands in and BOOM, an electrical fire has started. It is so important to educate not only yourself, but your family as well.

If you experience fire damage in your home, call Complete DKI 24/7. Our technicians work around the clock and are always fully prepared in uniforms and clearly marked Complete DKI vans. Thanksgiving is one of America’s favorite holidays for obvious reasons… food. The delicious turkey, mash potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole; oh I could go on forever. While this is such a fun time of the year, we have to be extra careful when it comes to kitchen fires. Fire Safety in the kitchen is always important, especially during any big holiday such as Thanksgiving when there is a lot more activity going on than normal. Did you know that cooking is one of the leading causes for home fires and home injuries? Thanksgiving is one of the most common days for home cooking fires. Frying the turkey and other foods is the greatest risk for this! Complete DKI has some tips for you and your family on how to have a safe and fire-free Thanksgiving this year!

  • Try to keep children out of the kitchen while the meal is being prepared. We all know that sometimes our kids can get carried away and maybe even knock something over into an open flame. This could result in burns to themselves and others.
  • Don’t forget to turn off the burners that you are finished using. With so much activity going on, we can forget to do this very easily. Try using a timer as a reminder when a dish is done.
  • Try to make sure that pot handles on the stove top, are faced towards the middle of the stove at all times.
  • Never leave the kitchen unattended while frying, broiling or grilling food. Turn off the stove if you have to leave the room for any reason at all.
  • Make sure to keep any fabric (kitchen towels, clothing or pot holders) away from an open flame. Try not to wear any loose clothing while cooking in the kitchen.

Thanksgiving is such a fun holiday where we are surrounded by family and good food. You may not have a house fire on your mind, but we all need to be aware that they are very common. Your cousin Susan, who you haven’t seen in years, could walk through the door and as soon as you hear her voice greeting you and the family, you’ll run over to her with excitement to give her a warm welcome. By this time you have completely forgotten the fact that you have a turkey frying, potatoes over boiling and the casserole broiling in the oven. All of the sudden your fabulous Thanksgiving dinner has gone up in flames as well as your newly remodeled kitchen! Please be extremely cautious and aware of your surroundings while cooking this year so you can avoid having this tragedy happen in your home. Complete DKI wishes each and every one of you a SAFE and HAPPY Thanksgiving!
